Biking is a great way to explore the outdoors, fitness, or simply have fun. That is down from the mountain of high speed liquid waste, the experience can be unforgettable in terms of emotions, but also can be very precarious. Be careful and walks can be fun for the whole family, although there are underlying dangers.

Basically, there are three distinctive styles of mountain biking – downhill, free riding and cross country. While there is some similarity in the three styles, the skills are different. The style you choose, it would be a decisive factor in the type of bike you need.

Cycling on any uneven surfaces that best describes the sport. Special areas in North America are designed to meet this demand. Contact your local park to become familiar with the route and other rules and regulations if it is for a road. There may be group rides and many competitions are held in your area. Check network and the local newspaper for more information on these events. Groups could be formed by experienced pilots and those at the initial level.

Two prerequisites needed to excel in this field: the stamina and energy. It will also take ambition and practice to succeed and conquer the course. The time and repeat tests are necessary here, as in any sporting activity. There will be some small injuries here and there as they start as a beginner.

Selection of the bike to your personal taste and may decide the type of horse that you would in the future. Choosing a bike is not an easy task given the wide variety of shapes, sizes and prices are available on the market. Do not buy a bike before scanning across the network and compare different prices. Before settling with any bike, be sure to try it for the first time since you and your bike are inseparable after some time. When buying, make sure you check for comfort, how it fits, even how they are oriented.

Mountain biking is to travel through dangerous landscape and you must wear a helmet and knee pads, elbow pads. Should be marked behind a group or riding in the woods, remember to wear a pair of goggles. Safety must be the priority and not taken lightly when you’re biking.

Emergencies on the Trail – Are You Prepared?

August 22nd, 2010

Many times mountain bikers ride into areas miles from civilization and although it is unfortunate, accidents do happen. If the rider is wearing the proper safety gear then most of the time the result is a scraped up knee or elbow. However there are times where things can be a bit more serious and being far from help in a remote area is a moment none of us would want to experience.

But if this were to happen, do you know what to do? The first few minutes sometimes are critical in the treatment of a wound and must be addressed immediately. Knowing what to do in these situations is an important lesson that mountain bikers should learn.

There are some common biking injuries that almost anyone can treat with a little know-how. Every biker should carry a basic first aid kit with them on the trail. Nothing fancy just a few essential items in a zip lock bag will suffice. A roll of sterile gauze bandage, medical tape, first aid cream, band aids, and a small 6oz squeeze bottle of Betadine or hydrogen peroxide is a good start.

Beyond the injuries listed here there are many other serious injuries that can happen therefore it is recommended that mountain bikers take a first aid course to learn how to treat a variety of injuries. The Red Cross is a good source for free first aid training.

Lacerations – The first rule is to stop the bleeding. For severe wounds apply pressure directly to the wound using a sterile bandage if available. Keep pressure on the wound until the bleeding is under control. If the wound is minor and not bleeding severely clean the wound carefully by flushing the wound with the sterile solution in your first aid kit or from a water bottle. Keep dirty hands and other items away from the wound. Use sterile dressings from the first aid kit or any clean dry clothing article available to cover the wound.
Concussions – A person does not have to lose consciousness to get a concussion. If during a fall a rider hits their head it is wise to then be cautious. If the fall was rather hard do not let the rider get back on the bike, just walk back to get medical help. Monitor the rider’s condition and look for signs of concern including bruising around the eyes, a headache that progressively worsens, vomiting, or signs of being less alert.
Broken collarbone – This happens quite a lot with mountain bikers. The proper field treatment is to create a sling to secure the arm that is on the same side as the break. The sling should be adjusted so the arm is rested at a 90-degree angle.
Broken bones – Arms, wrist, and leg breaks are common. Know how to create a splint and apply it to the break. Use any straight light weight item. On the trail the choices are many. Use two pieces that are long enough to extend below and above the break. Tubes are a good item to use to secure the splint. Be sure not to tighten the splint too tight as to cut of blood flow, check toes or fingers regularly. For a broken finger sometimes the best splint is the finger next to it. Simply tape the broken finger to the adjacent one.
Shock – Often times shock will also begin to appear in victims so know the warning signs and the treatment. Keep the victim warm. If their head is red, raise it so it is at a level that is above their feet while lying down. If their head is pale, then raise the feet to a level that is above their head while lying down.

After field treating a victim do the best you can to seek medical attention immediately. Never allow a victim of severe injury to ride the bike back.

Being prepared for emergencies should be considered when planning trips into remote areas. Cell phones may or may not work in remote areas. Portable GPS units should be carried on rides that are in remote uninhabited area. Accidents will happen and it is not a question of when will it happen but do you know what to do when it does. Again it is recommended that you seek free training from organizations such as the Red Cross.
