while we're at it, here's a game preview from miami spice:
Big game tonight, and as get I am now convinced that Miami is going to have its hands full with Wisconsin. Sort of wish I hadn’t made the wager with High Life.
They’ve got a real tough d line, and Schofield especially is a monster – could be trouble for a O line that while better is still a little uneven at times.
And they have depth at LB, which means that our trip of RBs – D-Berry, JJ, and Coop – may not be able to wear them out early to set up some bigger runs in the 2nd half.
But nonetheless, if you give Coach Whip a month to prepare, you know that he’s going to put up some points. I have no doubt that we’ll score some points.
Its our defense, as usual, that has me concerned.
First off, we have a habit of making pretty average quarterbacks look great by giving them too much time, and ‘sconny has both a very good quarterback (actually a higher rating than J12) and a big, mean o line. If we don’t bring it, that guy is going to pick us apart.
And, on top of that, the Badger RB Baker is a load – the type of big, strong back that has given Miami trouble for 20 years. Think William Floyd, Greg Jones, Jonathan Dwyer, Cory Schlesinger…some bad memories.
Which brings me to the U documentary. What struck me while watching the film was just how dominant those defenses were. Sure, Miami had some great offenses, and some real star power at times at the skill positions, but for the most part it was the D that consistently was dominant.
I don’t have time to give you a full review today, but I will say this – if Miami wants to be consistently dominant again – or even just finish a season in the Top 10 again – it is going to need to get tougher on defense. And if the Canes want to be a real contender next year, they really need to set the tone tonight, against a physical team – go out and hit ‘em hard in the mouth, make plays early and often – in order to build confidence and momentum going into next season.
Going to be a long day here at work…
